Buying a caravan, camper, or motorhome isn’t just about the layout you desire and the price. It’s also about making sure the vehicle is safe to drive, compliant, and properly transferred into your name.
South Australia’s rules are straightforward, but details about registration transfer and proof of ownership matter, as well as any gas or electrical work would have to be completed and certified by licensed tradespeople.
If you buy an SA-registered caravan or trailer, you must transfer the registration into your name within 14 days of the purchase date. Transfers are typically handled through Service SA (online, in person, or by post, depending on eligibility). Late transfers can attract additional fees, so it’s worth doing promptly.
As the seller, the best practice is to lodge a Notice of Disposal as soon as possible after the sale, so the vehicle is no longer recorded as being in your name.
In South Australia, a roadworthy inspection isn’t required for every sale as in some other states. However, a roadworthy inspection may be required in specific situations, such as if the vehicle has been defective, structurally changed, or significantly modified.
Even if it’s not mandatory, organising an independent inspection can be a smart move if you want extra peace of mind before handing over money.
If the caravan has gas appliances (cooktop, hot water system, heater, fridge, etc.) or aftermarket electrical work, demand evidence before buying that the work was done professionally by licensed trades and complies with relevant Australian Standards.
Before you commit, it’s worth checking if:
Before making payment, inspect the caravan in person wherever possible and confirm:
If you’re buying privately, request a written receipt of sale that includes the sale price, date, buyer/seller details, and the caravan’s identifying details.
These steps are important to protect your purchase and make sure you can register, tow, and travel confidently from day one. Confirming transfer details, documentation, and safety basics upfront can save you a painful surprise later.
Caravan Sales recommends every buyer confirm certification (where relevant) and registration details before completing a sale, so your journey starts with peace and ease.
Read genuine reviews from fellow caravanners and buy with confidence, knowing you’re dealing with sellers you can trust.

All active listings on Caravan Sales are currently available. If a caravan has been sold, the seller should remove or update their listing. For peace of mind, we always recommend contacting the seller directly.
Caravan Sales does not inspect caravans. Listings are created directly by sellers. We encourage buyers to inspect caravans in person and demand service history, compliance certificates, and receipts where relevant.
While we don’t provide finance or insurance directly, Caravan Sales partners with Stratton Finance to help you explore finance options. You can use our loan calculator to estimate repayments and, if you’re interested, connect directly with Stratton Finance to arrange a loan. Please note that all results are an indication only and not a quote or pre-approval.
Many of our sellers can also recommend trusted providers, and you’re always free to arrange finance or insurance through your preferred company.
The safest way to pay for a caravan is to meet with the seller in person so you can inspect the caravan before paying. Avoid sending money before you’ve seen the caravan. If in doubt, use secure payment methods and trust your instincts.
Because you deal directly with the seller, any disputes need to be resolved between you and them. However, we take fraudulent activity seriously, so if you believe a listing is suspicious, please report it to us immediately. If the seller is not responding to any of your calls or messages, the caravan may no longer be available. Report it to us so we can take necessary steps.
